Over recent weeks and months both communities have lobbied hard to ensure continuity of the Appin to Lismore Ferry. These actions followed earlier proposals in the Argyll and Bute Council budget for this service to be sacrificed as a spending cut, and fears for the longer term as the current vessel reaches the end of its working life. The service is essential to the wellbeing of the joint communities because it enables the sharing of key social and economic resources. We have now been informed that the recent Scottish budget for 2020-21 includes funds for Argyll and Bute Council to continue to support all its inter island ferries. In addition, it also includes a capital allocation for the required new vessel on the route between Appin and Lismore. Both the Appin and Lismore Community Councils will continue to monitor this situation and do their best to ensure this service does indeed continue to meet the needs of our joint communities, and that a suitable new vessel is in place when the existing one reaches the end of its working life at the end of 2021.
